Magda Stawarska-Beavan is an artist working predominantly with sound, moving image and print, often connecting traditional printmaking processes with new technologies such as digital audio. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, in a gallery environment as well as in public places. Her two-dimensional work has been shown recently in international printmaking shows such as: The 16th Space International Print Biennial, Seoul, Korea; The International Print Triennial, Kraków-Oldenburg-Vienna and The 5th International Printmaking Biennial of Douro Alijó, Portugal. Her most recent sound project were presented as part of the In Certain Places program and in an open-air public space in Museums Quartier, Vienna, Austria in the summer of 2011 as a part of Klanghimmel European Tonspur. She is going to be artist in residence as part of the Tonspur project in Museum Quarter Vienna in their 2013 program.

Stawarska-Beavan’s current project “Krakow to Venice in 12 hours”, supported by Art Council England, attempts to capture sonic identities of places, looking for the rhythms within the city soundscape and defining the multilayered role of a public space, which changes and shifts during the course of the day.

This project maps a journey from Krakow, Poland to Venice, Italy, crossing the borders of 6 countries: Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, and Italy (Kraków, Katowice, Bielsko-Biała, Ostrava, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna, Graz, Maribor, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice).
It acts as a personal and subjective audio travel guide and a clock for the journey, mapping the movement through geographical locations and the passage of time. The sound piece will be based on a structure of the 12-hour clock, with time as a connecting element between several locations. 12 hours of multichannel audio will be presented in a public location as well as existing online; changing as the project progresses.

Magda Stawarska-Beavan is part of Printmaking staff at UCLan and together with Tracy Hill she coordinates ArtLab project.
